Dolphinfish or Mahi Mahi

DOLPHINFISH, MAHI-MAHI (Coryphaena hipputus)

Mahi –mahi is a near surface feeding specie. They inhabit all warmer marine offshore environments. They can reach 40lb (18kg). They are carnivores feeding on flying fish, sardines, mackerel and are one of fastest growing fish. They swim in schools and are quite often found near floating debris or other floating structures.

Dolphinfish, mahi-mahi are predatory fish that fees in schools and are quite often found fear floating debris or other floating structures. We fish for them with minnow imitations, occasionally also smaller poppers. 

 

Equipment:

For dolphinfish, mahi-mahi we use 10 to 12wt, 9ft rods. Reels are extremely important, since they need to have strong and smooth drag. When hooked they are extremely acrobatic and great game fish. Fly fishing leader ends with 30 to 20lb tippet.
